Rolling for their 12th consecutive year and bearing the distinction of being Baton Rouge's first and only all-female krewe, the Krewe of Artemis is a New Orleans style parade held after dark in downtown Baton Rouge. Held two Fridays before Mardi Gras day, this krewe focuses great attention on bringing a family-oriented atmosphere to the streets of the Capital City that is fun for all ages and certain to impress.
Krewe Mystique de la Capitale is Baton Rouge's oldest parading Mardi Gras Krewe. An afternoon offering, this spectacle also comes equipped with an atmosphere that will please the whole family, and they have been doing it for 37 years!
The Krewe of Orion has selected "Heroes and Villains" as the theme for their 17th annual roll through downtown Baton Rouge on a Saturday night. Keeping with the family-oriented spirit of the majority of Baton Rouge's parades, Orion is excited to equip the masks and costumes and toss throws that match their theme as they are accompanied by marching bands and eye-catching floats. The Krewe of Orion will also hold a Masquerade Ball at the Baton Rouge River Center at 7 p.m. on the night of the parade as the floats and bands finish up their march at the Exhibition Hall. Guest seats are available only through advanced ticket sales. Visit their website for more info.
Baton Rouge Mardi Gras goes to the dogs with the Mystic Krewe of Mutts parade as it features pet-sized floats and costumes that celebrate humans' best friends. While the parade is a main attraction, CAAWS also has a full day of activities planned including food booths, shopping, pet adoptions, contests and other activities. The Krewe of Mutts parade raises much needed funds for the Community Outreach Spay/Neuter Program that helps control our animal population in a humane way. CAAWS does not receive any government assistance and exists only through donations and memberships. For more information about CAAWS, be sure to check out the contact information on their website.
The Krewe of Southdowns has opted to face their fears this year as they have selected the theme of "Phobias" for their 2015 parade. After a long planning process, the krewe is excited to offer BR residents a parade in a different setting than the majority of other routes as they start their run from Glasgow Middle School. This year will be the 28th time the Krewe of Southdowns have brought their festive flair to the streets of the Capital City.
With the theme of "St. Valentine's Day Masquerade", Spanish Town's 35th Annual Parade rolls once again as 100-plus wacky floats will hit the streets at high noon. The signature pink flamingos of the parade will be out in numbers as marching bands and the floats wind their way from State Capitol Drive through the historic neighborhood of the parade's namesake. While the parade is not to be missed, the Spanish Town Mardi Gras 26th Annual Ball is also a feature attraction. It will be held on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Baton Rouge River Center with doors opening at 7 p.m. Bucktown All-Stars will be the headlining band with their tunes kicking off at 7:30 p.m. More details about the ball and parade are available on their website.
